Discovering Oman

Oman is a country I hold close to my heart, having spent my high school years there. I was blessed to be living in a place of preserved culture and to be surrounded by a humbling and kind local people.

When living somewhere, it is easy to normalise the scenery around you and cease from appreciating the comparison your home has from the rest of the world. A few months ago I returned to Muscat, the capital, and found myself viewing the majestic scenery through new eyes.

Oman has been blessed with canyons, mountains, deserts, oasis’ and striking rocks which plunge into the blue Indian Ocean. I drove out to the sinkhole and Wadi Shab to view a few of these natural wonders I had previously taken for granted.

A sinkhole is an area where the ground has collapsed leaving a crater like hole. Bimmah sinkhole is about an hour and half from Muscat and is thought to be one of the largest and most beautiful in the world. It has been surrounded by a public garden and the first look over the surrounding wall is breathtaking.

Swimming in the clear turquoise water is a joy. Little fish swim alongside you, there are caves to explore and rocky walls waiting to be climbed and dived from.

I would recommend going during the morning of the Omani working week (Sunday to Thursday) to have a quieter chance for photos and a swim. One can also enjoy the atmosphere of expatriate and local families during the weekend.

The next stop was to Wadi Shab. Wadi is the Arabic word for a dry riverbed and these often form canyon like formations. Wadi Shab’s grand entrance of meeting mountains is only a taster of the oasis waiting to be explored.

Comfortable shoes are essential as one walks over stones left by the river and climbs along the terraces left by natural rock formations.

Pockets of clear water can be splashed in. One of the deeper pools hides a narrow crevice, which may swam through to reveal a small hidden light-filled cave with an untouched waterfall.

Oman has many breathtaking wadis, deserts and beaches waiting for the adventurous to explore.
