As a general rule west is best, and this holds true for breathtaking views from Santorini.
The caldera of the crescent shaped island curves towards the magnificent and world famous sunsets.
The key places to view this are Oia (pronounced ee-a) and Firostafani.
From Firostefani one will watch the sun disappear behind Tholos, another island in the Cyclades.
Some may recommend that you stroll or dine in Thira – I will not. Though this is also a location where you can watch the sun set behind Tholos, it is overrun with people, tourist tat, donkey droppings, the port and loud Brits and Americans venturing off – gasp – cruise ships.
Preferably choose a suite in a beautiful hotel when you may relax and enjoy the sunset from your terrace before heading out to dine.
Or your private pool/jacuzzi.
Many of the restaurants with the best view do it come hand in hand with the best view. You deserve the best of both.
The height of the caldera and the views over the surrounding islands enhance the magic and superiority of the Santorini sunset.
