Let’s get straight to it. Here are the 5 best tips to securing your next flight upgrade:
- Fly with the same airline.
Wherever possible choose an airline convenient to your base and stick to it. As you work your way up the tiers you will start to reap the benefits. One of these being that when a flight is full and upgrades are required the airline will first turn to its loyal customers. Other benefits include a guaranteed seat (even on full flights) and lounge access regardless of which class you’re flying.
- Dress well.
Don’t expect an upgrade if you arrive in your hoodie, you want to define yourself from ‘Economy’ passengers. Dress simply and comfortably with understated colours. I usuallydress for my arrival destination and aim to wear a maxi dress or black trousers with a loose white shirt. The reason I love my maxi inflight is that they are perfect for curling up in, easy to elegantly accessorise and don’t constrict the body.
- Travel solo. I have never been surprisingly upgraded whilst travelling in a group. Travelling alone gives you mobility.
- Last minute discounts.
You can also ask about upgrade option at check-in. If there are first or business seats available the cost of upgrade often greatly reduces just before the flight. This is also the time to start waving around the airmiles you’ve been collecting.
- Be nice.
It sounds so simple. The representative checking you in has to deal with all sorts of behaviour on a day to day basis. It may surprise you how much you will stand out with wide eyes, a genuine smile and pleasant attitude.
Wait for your flight and board, straight from the lounge to the plane, in peace.
Cocoon into your own prrivate hidey-hole for the next 7 hours….
… with an array of fims and entertainment.
But first get started on the complimentary champagne.
Block out the engine noise with your onboard noise cancelling head phones (but first Snapchat how cute they look).
Take your pre-dinner drinks at the onboard bar and lounge.
… and eat with actual cutlery.
And just incase anyone starts to feel too important…
… you are still one in 72! 🙂
Good luck with your next upgrade or simply book Emirates Business Class for your next flight!
